Cruxie (and evidently all Republicans) are not capable of grasping the simplest of mathematical facts: when taxes are levied as a percentage of income, people with larger incomes will pay more than those with smaller incomes.

They also seem to think that very rich people should pay a lower percentage than the rest of us.

Debating the fairness of their cockamamie world-view is pointless ... they have no sense of fairness, and never will.

Affluence, a Rant

Postby Coondog » 2015 Oct 17 11:55

When most workers look at their pay stubs, they can see that the Social Security payroll tax rate is 12.4 percent – with the employee and employer each paying 6.2 percent. But many workers do not know that any annual wages above $106,800 are not taxed by Social Security. In other words, a worker who makes twice the Social Security wage cap – $213,600 per year – pays Social Security tax on only half of his or her earnings, and one who makes just over a million dollars per year pays the tax on only about a tenth.

This is a prime example of the rich not paying their fair proportional share. There are others.

We are not Broke. While it is true that we have run up the credit cards, the national debt must be considered in terms of net worth. A concept seldom mentioned in the discussion of slashing social programs.

Not to constantly be picking on Bush (he had very bad advisors), but we might begin with the Bush Tax Cuts. We have never understood how cutting taxes is supposed to bring in more tax revenue. The fact that we have a very good example to enlighten us to the contrary, that theory still holds sway in republican circles. To quote Boener (loosely), "We don't have a tax problem, we have a spending problem."

So......in the frenzy to protect donors and corporate interests from increased responsibility, and through the process of political cajolery, programs designed not only to provide for those at the bottom of the socio-economic scale, but which also benefit society as a whole either directly or indirectly, are slashed.

Yet, when certain factors indicative of public social decay manifest themselves, such as simi-weekly mass killings, it runs up against unconditional love of the NRA. It's not a gun problem, it's a...........mental health problem. To bring it full circle, if it's a mental health problem, why are we so lacking in resources to deal with mental health issues. Well...because THOSE sorts of things have been the first to go in the festival of spending cuts. Socialist, giveaways, as it were.

According to the republicans, the reason for mass killings is not guns, but............them.

This is one example. There are others.

To return to the social security aspect, any sports stadium seating ticket price depends on an advantageous view. Nose bleed seats are relatively cheap, but the fans get very little for them. 50 yard line seats are more expensive. Patrons pay more, according to their ability. The rising prices do not have a cap where those in the private luxury boxes pay the same as a 50 yard line seat......no, they're more expensive because they provide more amenities and a better perspective. The nose bleed-people could never afford it. Likely not the 50 year line folks, either.

So, why does social security have a cap? Why does most of the affluent pay nothing on most of their income? Because, like having the ability to deduct the price of a luxury box as a business expense they enjoy and benefit from the privilege of wealth.

Numbers and percentages cannot disprove the fact that there is more afoot than just income inequality. It is only surprising that one hears less in the way of envy from the poor over the affluence of the rich than the whining of the rich because they don't yet have it all.

Enough already

Look LOOSER. I have a challenge for you. Find a quote of mine that PROVES I am "not capable of grasping" either:

A. When taxes are levied as a percentage of income, people with larger incomes will pay more than those with smaller incomes.

OR

B. The very rich people should pay a lower percentage than the rest of us.

YOU CAN'T because NEITHER IS TRUE.

Well, as I live and breathe, our Stonewall has finally come up for air. Welcome back oh mighty Stonewall, standing there again so tall.

Your temporary incompetence at running this Forum denied me a zillion chances to joke about politics.

But it didn't matter much. Republicans did a finer job of acting like clowns during the past few months than I could ever have done.

Mike Tyson

Postby Coondog » 2016 May 02 08:59

So.....Mike Tyson endorses Donald Trump. Trump has no problem with rapists from Brooklyn, as long as they don't sneak in from Mexico.

Ted Cruz calls Tyson a weakling and a coward. Ted is looking forward to attending a contested convention in Cleveland...... with only one ear.

Meanwhile, thanks to Stonewall, we now know that it takes about 4 months to get a facial tattoo removed.

Well, yes. Of course.

Now that we know, let Congress do something about it.

Here's a point of view on 3rd party candidates.

I'm interested in reactions among us forum users think about it, especially Fangz who I detect may have inclinations toward 3rd party participation?

PS. I voted for Bernie in the primary election. With a tinge of regret, I'm voting for Hillary as the next best thing on the scene with any chance of winning. She may lose a close election to Trump only because of Nader-type idealists. In my view, this would be an existential threat to American Democracy.

OK......I read the article and found it as guilt-trippy as willfully blind Clinton supporters. I'm not buying anybody's guilt trip, no matter how they wrap and adorn that package in a thinly veiled attempt to pass it off as something else.

That being said, here is where I stand at this point in time. Over the course of my lifetime, I've voted 3rd party more often than not. This election is ramming the choice of the 2 worst possible candidates (for the major parties) down the voters' throats.......replete with all of the fear-mongering and brow-beating they can scrape together. Add to that, the complicit corporate media, and we have a recipe that allows the oligarchs to retain control at the expense of the people.

The Wikileaks e-mail dump going into the Democratic convention laid bare the corruption inside the party for all to see. And we with a conscience and moral compass are supposed to fall in line and give that a pass...turn a blind eye and support it? That is great example of what is wrong the nation and our supposed 2 party system.

I would say I'm sorry but I'm not. I voted for Sanders in the primary and held out hope through the convention that the tide would turn. But the sickening display in Philly by the elite Democrats brought too many visions of The Stepford Wives to mind....and the corruption within the party was not only ignored, it was swept under the rug. The very poor attempt of the Democrats (once again aided by by an obedient press) to spin this as a Russian hack job on behalf of Trump was not only laughable, it was shameful. They really must believe that the voters are stupid.

I have to agree with a number of people that real change will not be possible within the current system or within the current Democratic and Republican parties. The change is going to have come from outside the entrenched corporate duopoly. Until people have the courage to vote their convictions and support candidates who have visions beyond the corporatocracy of the duopoly, this nation will continue its downward spiral.

That old axiom "Nero fiddled while Rome burned" reminds me of the DNC and the RNC and all who blindly follow their path. Rome will definitely burn to the ground if people are too damned afraid to vote for real change.

Catch a clue.......the change will not be found in either Clinton or Trump.

I haven't decided yet whether my vote will go Green or Libertarian. I still have some research to do there even though I am not unfamiliar with either Stein or Johnson. I want to review their current platforms in their entirety.

Interesting Poll

Postby Crux » 2016 Jul 31 09:12

https://twitter.com/wikileaks/status/758855786806190080

50%Donald Trump -Republican
22%Hillary Clinton -Dems
12%Gary Johnson -Libertarian
16%Jill Stein -Greens

This is a Twitter/Wikileaks poll of over 117,000.

We already know Independents will break for Trump. He is garnering marked support of far more blacks, Hispanics, Democrats, women, gays.
and Bernie voters that the media cares to acknowledge. Hold onto your hats, because the MO could swing big for Trump come election time.

Hillary is a disaster, and a lot of folks on the Left, and in the Center KNOW IT... :sail:

Interesting indeed. And frightening.

It may only be a nonscientific Twitter poll that carries little weight, since Twitter is mostly young people and young people have a notoriously poor voting record.

But more credible polls and analysis also show Trump strength. Clinton and Trump are tied. And here's another by Nate Silver.

I am very worried. We have to do everything in our power to keep this evil fascist bully's hands off government.

“How many more of these stinking, double-downer sideshows will we have to go through before we can get ourselves straight enough to put together some kind of national election that will give me and the at least 20 million people I tend to agree with a chance to vote FOR something, instead of always being faced with that old familiar choice between the lesser of two evils?”
― Hunter S. Thompson, Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail '72

As John Pilger - johnpilger.com writes: "In the circus known as the American presidential campaign, Donald Trump is being presented as a lunatic, a fascist. He is certainly odious; but he is also a media hate figure. That alone should arouse our scepticism...Among Clinton’s biggest backers are the Israel lobby and the arms companies that fuel the violence in the Middle East. She and her husband have received a fortune from Wall Street. And yet, she is about to be ordained the women’s candidate, to see off the evil Trump, the official demon."

What he said.

On the other hand, this is a more optimistic analysis. I hope it's correct, but we should act on Nate Silver's more pessimistic analysis and fight like hell to keep that goon out of office.

Well, I don't know about this
Fangz wrote:Donald Trump is being presented as a lunatic, a fascist. He is certainly odious; but he is also a media hate figure. That alone should arouse our scepticism...

but I have clear personal views about Donald Trump. He is all of the above, lunatic, fascist, odious, and hateful. He is also a bigot and a bold cheat with nothing to commend himself as a figure to be considered for public office.

I have a past with the Donald and am well-calibrated on his character, from personal observation. He and I both had girls in a Broadway show. Toward the end of every performance we would enter at the stage door and wait for our girls to finish. Thus did he and I hang out regularly with significant chat time. He was personable enough, and introduced me to people he knew (Larry King, etc.) but tell-tale indicators of his personality and character slowly emerged even then.

Example: Broadway shows had a tradition of friendly cast softball games in Central Park when the theaters are dark (Mondays.) Once, our girls' show was one player short and so Marla invited Donald to fill the vacancy. As the game progressed both teams became increasingly annoyed at him because he cheated. He would misstate the score in the favor of his team, he would haggle over strikes and balls, would argue over tag outs, etc. ad nauseum, always wrongly and always to the advantage of his team.

Marla finally reached her breaking point and screamed, "Donald, we don't want you here. Go home." And he did, tail between his legs.

Wise One.....

You have most lived a very colorful life, rich with interesting characters. I have great respect for your opinions even when I don't agree with them.

The quote about Trump being presented as a lunatic is credited to John Pilger, a true journalist whom I greatly admire.

I don't disagree that Trump is dangerous. However, Clinton is no less dangerous to the welfare of the nation and the world at large. She is just damn better at polishing lies and spinning webs of deceit.

The following read from Mr. Pilger is quite educational and eye-opening. A lot of what is contained was already known to me since I tend to seek out alternative media sources and pretty much take with a grain of salt what the American press has to say about anything of major importance. They have become the lap dog propagandists of the Beltway and the multinational corporations. They are doing nothing toward actually educating the public with facts which is the major responsibility of any journalist with a shred of integrity.

Why the Rise of Fascism is Again the Issue
