Changing the subject slightly, there's a really important race on for our next county Board of Supervisors. Talk about room for improvement -- what could be a better race to pay attention to?
My favorite publication in this area is the
Rockbridge Advocate, packed as it is with news people really talk about but nobody else is brave enough to print, and with delightful humor.
The Advocate has a
terrific column this month, each candidate for Supervisor answering questions. The answers are wonderfully revealing of the differences we have to choose among.
Some candidates, especially the challengers, are clear, articulate, and forthcoming with positive ideas about making this a better place.
Others, especially the incumbents, convey a sense of lazy arrogance, as if they are
entitled to hold their offices in perpetuity, spouting only bumbling platitudes that mean nothing, or short and dismissive answers that convey only contempt for the voter.
I'd say a pretty thorough house-cleaning is in order. And if you want to encourage one local publication to continue to reveal the truth, while keeping fresh and up to date on local news, subscribe to
