Speaking of Horrors..............

Crux thinks this is funny! Now we know what passes for humor down in the trenches.

Having perused the entire article, the situation appears typical. Taxes are raised on corporations. Corporations find ways to avoid the tax. Less than anticipated funding is available. Projects get prioritized and delayed. Nobody keeps track of anything.

But the really typical part of this so-far-failed-effort, is that the first expenditures go to consulting companies......which brings us 3,000 miles East to the overtaxed hamlet of Lexington, VA where yet another $65,000 plus is being shuffled out the door to yet another consulting company, the purpose of which appears to be how to suck enough additional money out of taxpayers through utility and service costs to address much needed infrastructure improvements.....like a sidewalk on Estill Street.

With all the money Lexington, alone, shells out to consultants we could have linked Vesuvius and Rapps Mill with high speed rail and have enough left over to paint the stop lights green, which is likely the recommendation of the next consultant firm who gets to waste $65,000.

If you don't know what you need, and have to pay a consulting firm to tell you, then you probably don't need it.

If the goal is to create an environment suitable to lie adjacent to W&L with it's 1.4 billion dollar endowment, then pricing out the less-than-affluent is good start. Perhaps as the remaining middle income residents flee for a more bucolic and affordable domain, they can take the offending statue of Stonewall Jackson with them.

Wonder how much that would cost? We could hire a consulting firm................

Coondog :hum:

Thanks to the Advocate (and crux) for providing the fodder for this screed.

Horrors? Funny? OK

Postby Crux » 2015 Aug 21 18:53

Oh I do think it is "funny". Funny projections, funny promises, but not funny money.

Those are REAL dollars and REAL drains on California's economic well-being.

Whatever is left of California after the fires and the drought and intervening mud slides is destined to break off and sink into the Pacific Ocean.....so what happens there is of little consequence, compared to the center of the universe, or Rockbridge County as it is commonly known.

It is not debatable, like climate change or evolution, that the East Coast sinks about one inch a year while the West Coast is similarly rising. This is where the San Andreas Fault comes into play. One big snap and the West Coast drops.....like a rock. The lack of counter balance accelerates the sinking of the East Coast and Bingo.....Beach Front property in Nelson County! You can try this with a big flat rock down at the creek. It's physics!

And consultants will not be required.

Actually look into California's SUBSIDENCE based on water withdrawals from deep aquifers and the threat to the aqueducts...

Why the Feds Won't Let You Keep Fossil Fuels in the Ground An interesting short read from Mother Jones

And, in case you missed it......take the time to watch the documentary Before the Flood on NatGeo. If you don't have cable, you can go to the Facebook pages of National Geographic or Leonardo DiCaprio and link to it in those places.

And from MSNBC of all places........a stellar clip from Lawrence O'Donnell on Native Americans & Standing Rock:

Protests at Standing Rock

This topic has gone virtually buried during this farce of a campaign....neither candidate has given it the focus it deserves.

Imagine the CARBON being put into the atmosphere in these historic (purposeful) California "wild" fires. Tremendous and aren't the Libs all broken up about "climate change".... Silliness.

Ah, our friend Crux. The perpetual question is, "Is he trollishly and deliberately ignorant, or is it innate so he can do nothing to cure it?"

Forest fires are, of course, integral to Nature and its many complex processes. They were here long before man arrived, and Nature is set up to deal with them. Indeed, some life forms depend absolutely on fires for their existence.

So, NO, wildfires and purposely set control fires do NOT add to the atmospheric carbon burden. Nature balances every tree that burns, with another that absorbs carbon from the atmosphere to grow another tree. All of this is recently created biomass.

It is only the burning of fossil fuels, those like coal and oil containing carbon that has been locked up outside the ecosystem and the atmosphere, for hundreds of millions to billions of years, that contributes net carbon dioxide to the global greenhouse.

Well I did a little searching and found that wildfires do contribute to both carbon and global warming.
What do you think of that Mr. Know it all?

Aha, Cannoneer to is afflicted with the myopia born of ignorance.

A myopic view is that wildfires put carbon dioxide into the air, as they certainly do.

Nature operates in a larger view, over a longer time. All over the planet, plant life is growing and absorbing carbon from the atmosphere in order to build itself. Under normal and natural conditions, the rate of vegetation growth exactly balances the rate of vegetation death from all causes, including wildfires.

Nature recycles carbon, from Plants to atmospheric CO2, to plants again. It maintains balance, and there is no climate change.

When man burns fossil fuels, he injects quantities of CO2 that are so massive that the plant population is incapable of processing it, so the concentration grows and the climate changes.

Yes, yes, you copied all of that right out of old textbooks. Maybe you should do a little searching yourself and learn something.
